The Arbuthnott Family Association (Southern Africa Branch)
Newsletter: December 2003
  (Web version) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Since the previous Arbuthnott Family Association (AFA) newsletter was sent out two years back much has happened. Three AGM’s have been held - the first at the Rand Club in Johannesburg on 14 January 2024 where fourteen members and friends of AFA attended.

Attending the first AFA AGM at the Rand Club in Johannesburg were Darryll Arbuthnot (TM,P11,F.2.d.), Henery Shepherdson James Arbuthnot (TM,P4,D.3.a.(B).), and Shireen Birley. [Photograph - Not on web version]

The second meeting was held in the boardroom of Garlicke & Bowsfield at their impressive new offices in Umhlanga. Fewer people, twelve, attended this meeting on 9 August 2002, perhaps because it took place over the weekend of an important rugby match in Durban. But those who were there enjoyed themselves enormously and it was particularly good to meet up with Richard Pemberton (TM,P8,D.3.b.) and his wife Sally. Richard is a Senior Partner of Garlicke & Bowsfield and had arranged the venue for our meeting and he had also organized the food and drinks, which were much enjoyed and appreciated. Another family member who was at the second AGM and who we all enjoyed meeting for the first time was “Buzz” Bolton (TM,P9,A.3.b.) with his wife Hildegard.

By the time of the Association’s third AGM a number of lessons had been learned about appropriate planning and this meeting was very well attended. It took place at the Duncan School of Celtic Dancing, home also of the Theron family. Those who were there on the cold highveld evening of 23 July 2023 were treated to a magnificent display of Scottish dancing by Arbuthnot descendant and award winning dancer, Megan Theron, together with three other dancers.

Among those who attended the most recent AGM were Robert Bing and his wife Sarah. Robert is a nephew of Hon Hugh Arbuthnott who many of us met when he and his wife Anne came out from Scotland for the 150th anniversary celebrations during September 2000. Robert is based in Johannesburg with his family as Coca Cola Marketing Director: Eastern and Southern Africa.

AGM for 2004
Directors of AFA meet regularly throughout the year and discuss matters of interest to the family and the association. Plans for the 4th AGM during 2004 are well underway and it is hoped that more family members will be able to attend this occasion than have attended previous AGMs.

This meeting is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday, 15 August at the Fleur-de-Lys Club on the Hilton College Estate. It is hoped that as many family members as possible (not necessarily members of AFA) will be there, particularly those living in the Pietermaritzburg District.

Hilton College is in a particularly beautiful setting and was chosen as the venue for the 2004 AGM because of its long association with many descendants of James and Jane Arbuthnot.

It will be term time at the College when we plan to be there. Those who attend our AGM have also been invited to attend the chapel service at Hilton with the school pupils and staff in the morning and this service begins at 8h00. After the service the remainder of the morning may be taken up with a number of activities at the school such as a visit to the school’s archives, a walk along the Umgeni River or a leisurely tea at the Fleur-de-Lys Club. Details of these activities will be given to those who indicate they wish to attend the meeting. A Roman Catholic Mass will be conducted at the school’s chapel at 17h00 and again, an invitation has been extended to AFA to attend this service together with Catholic pupils and staff at the school.

Because we plan to enjoy a light lunch at the club we need to have an idea of how many to cater for. Please let us know if you will be there by completing the page at the back of this letter and returning it the AFA before the end of July 2004.
