Arbuthnot Family
Association
USA GATHERING – 2006
The Arbuthnot Family Association gathering will be
held at the Radisson Hotel Southeast, Parker Road & I-225 in Aurora,
Colorado from Friday, August 25 through Sunday, August 27. Our guest rooms
are offered at the special rate of $79 plus tax, applicable for up to 2
people per room. All rooms have color TV, free cable, hairdryers,
coffeemakers, ironing boards with irons, voicemail, data ports, and high
speed Internet. To get the Arbuthnot rate, call directly for reservations
and state that you are with the Arbuthnot Family Association. The local
number is 303-695-1700, and the toll-free long-distance number is
1-800-962-7672. There is a deadline of two weeks prior to the event, after
which the block of rooms will be released and the special rate will no
longer apply. We on the planning committee hope you will reserve your rooms
by August 1. There is a complimentary shuttle service from Denver
International Airport to the hotel (Ph. 303-695-1700 on arrival; we must
dial area codes for all calls in Colorado) and an Enterprise car rental desk
in the lobby.
Our plans include a reception Friday from 5-10:00 p.m., business meeting Saturday morning, banquet and entertainment Saturday evening, a bus tour in Denver Saturday afternoon, and a longer bus tour in the mountains on Sunday. (Additional information on these tours below.) The $50.00 registration fee includes snacks at the Friday reception, Saturday’s dinner and entertainment, meeting and banquet room rentals, bartender fee, printing and incidental expenses. The optional bus tours are charged separately.
Our chairman, Al Arbuthnot, is encouraging members and nonmembers with Arbuthnot connections to attend this centrally located gathering. We have some important issues to discuss, as well as the pleasure of renewing friendships and developing new ones within the family organization. Al says, “I look forward to being with you and sharing in the enjoyment and kinship of family.” Colorado is a great place to visit, and our gathering could be combined with a memorable vacation. It has been six years since we have met in a central location, and we are hoping to see as many of you as possible!

Saturday’s Tour
Denver, Colorado – Elevation 5280 feet
We will leave the hotel by tour bus right after lunch. The bus offers reclining seats, sound systems, air conditioning, scenic-view windows, and restrooms. We will ride by some of Denver’s points of interest, including the State Capitol Building, Governor’s Mansion, Molly Brown House, U.S. Mint, Colorado History Museum, Denver Public Library, and Denver Art Museum, as well as the sports venues of Coors Field, Pepsi Center, and Invesco Field. We plan to make stops at the 9th Street Historic District, in the Auraria section, where we can walk by some of the area’s oldest houses, and Larimer Square, a street of shops in Denver’s oldest commercial neighborhood. This is a trip of four to five hours.
Sunday’s Tour
Georgetown, Colorado - Elevation 8500 feet
This will be about a six-hour trip. A sweater or light jacket and comfortable shoes are advised. We plan to leave the hotel at 10:00 a.m. on a tour bus similar to Saturday’s. This trip takes us to the mountains, where we will be on our own in Georgetown, an 1800s mining town. The town is nestled in a valley among three 14,000-foot peaks and is rather compact, enabling easy walking. We have the option of an excursion on the Georgetown Loop train, a narrow-gauge steam railroad, at a charge of about $17; this route was built to move ore between mining camps, and features an exhilarating ride over Devil’s Gate Bridge, 95 feet above Clear Creek. Back in town, The Hamill House Museum, home of a silver mine owner, offers tours at a charge of about $5; this was one of the most luxurious houses in the Colorado Territory in 1879. Of course, Georgetown has restaurants and shopping, to enjoy at your own pace. We also hope to make short stops along our bus route to see several points of interest between Georgetown and Denver.
